Early Life

Oba Moshood Olalekan Balogun was born into the Aliiwo family of Ibadan on October 18, 1942. His father, Ibrahim Balogun, was a prominent cocoa produce merchant and a great-grandson of Balogun Okunmade (Ali-Iwo), an Ogbomoso prince who settled in the present-day Aliiwo compound, Agodi Ibadan, in 1863. His mother, Awawu Balogun, was the Iyalode elepo pupa, the woman leader of the Palm Oil Dealers Association of Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Education

Despite his royal lineage, Balogun pursued education diligently. He traveled to the United Kingdom, where he studied for his O and A level certificates while working part-time to sustain himself. Upon completion of his O and A level programs, he proceeded to Brunel University, leaving in 1973 with a master’s degree in Administration and Economics. He later enrolled for his PhD and became an alumnus of the University of Manchester in the UK.

Career

Balogun’s career spanned academia, politics, and traditional leadership. He was a lecturer at one of Nigeria’s oldest universities, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. He also served in the Industrial Public Relations department of Shell BP, the British petroleum exploration firm, and subsequently became the head of recruitment and scholarship of the organization. His highest political role was as senator for the same central area of Oyo state that he later served as king.
