Early Life

Chuck Schumer’s parents were Abraham Schumer, who ran an exterminating business, and Selma, a homemaker. Raised in a Jewish family, Schumer attended public schools in Brooklyn and graduated as the valedictorian of James Madison High School. He scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT.

Education

Schumer attended Harvard College, where he initially pursued studies in Chemistry before shifting to Social Studies after working in Eugene McCarthy’s 1968 Presidential campaign. He graduated magna cum laude in 1971. He then attended Harvard Law School, earning his Juris Doctor with honors in 1974. In 1974, Schumer was elected to the New York State Assembly, becoming the youngest assembly member since Theodore Roosevelt. He served three terms from 1975 to 1980. In 1980, Schumer successfully ran for the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from 1981 to 1999. During his years in the House, he became known as a leader of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party and as a highly effective advocate of legislation combating violent crime.

In 1998, Schumer was elected to the U.S. Senate, defeating Republican incumbent Al D’Amato. He has been victorious in every successive senatorial election since then. Schumer has made it a hallmark of his career to protect the middle class and those working to reach it. He has visited each of New York’s 62 counties every year, a promise he made in the first year itself.

Schumer served as the Senate’s minority leader from 2017 to 2021 before becoming majority leader in 2021.
