Early Life & Education

Tinubu was born in Lagos into the merchant family of Abibatu Mogaji, the Ìyál’ọ́jà of Lagos. He completed his primary education at St. John’s Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos before proceeding to Children Home School in Ibadan. To further his education, Tinubu relocated to the United States of America (USA) and attended Southwest College (now Richard J. Daley College) in Chicago before transferring to Chicago State University, where he earned a B.S. in business and administration in 1979.

After his graduation, Tinubu worked for a couple of American companies, including Deloitte, Arthur Andersen, GTE Services Corporation, and Haskins & Sells. He returned to Nigeria in the 1980s and worked for Mobil Nigeria as an auditor, later rising in the ranks there.

Tinubu’s political career began in 1992 when he was elected to the Lagos West senate seat as part of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). However, his political journey was interrupted when the military head of state Sani Abacha dissolved the Senate in 1993. During this period, Tinubu became active in a pro-democracy group, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). He was initially jailed for his pro-democracy activities before fleeing in exile in 1994; he returned to Nigeria after Abacha’s death in 1998.

In 1999, Tinubu, now part of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) party, was elected governor of Lagos state; he was reelected in 2003. During his two terms as governor, he was credited with improving the state’s finances through better enforcement of tax collection and for enacting a public transportation project to address the considerable traffic gridlock in Lagos.

After leaving office in 2007, Tinubu played a key role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2013. In 2023, he was elected president of Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in his political career.
