Abimbola began his career as a credit analyst at Chase Manhattan Bank (Nigeria) Limited. In 1990, he joined the prestigious law firm of Chris Ogunbanjo LP (Solicitors), where he served as the managing partner. He had extensive experience in commercial law, with a particular focus on capital markets, shipping, and mergers and acquisitions.
He served on the boards of several multinational corporations and non-profit organizations, including Beta Glass Plc and the Advisory Board of the University of Buckingham Centre for Extractive Studies. He also served on the Board of GTL Registrars Limited, AIICO Insurance Plc, and ConocoPhillips Limited amongst others.
Abimbola was the Group Chairman of NGX Group from 2021 to 2022. Prior to this, he was the President of the National Council of the NSE from 2017 to 2021. The NGX Group is the non-operating holding company that emerged from the demutualisation of The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
